I have received an update from the Environment Agency on the River Thames Scheme.

As a nationally significant infrastructure project, the Scheme must secure the necessary approvals through a Development Consent Order. It is therefore deeply disappointing that progress has paused during preparation of the DCO application.

Concerningly, the Scheme appears to be caught in a bureaucratic cycle, with further updates required to comply with DEFRA’s new partnership funding policy. The revised submission is now expected before Summer 2026.

I will continue to press for the River Thames Scheme to resume at the earliest possible point to ensure we have the best defences possible.
